Home Security Mistakes:
1. Hide your keys.
Some homeowners, who are afraid they will lose their keys choose to hide a key somewhere on the property. They think this will deter or even outsmart a potential burglar by placing the key under a mat, in the mailbox, or above the door. Burglars are well aware of all these commonly used hiding places. Under no circumstances should you leave the key to your house where it can be found. If you absent-minded and frequently lose your keys or lock yourself out of the house, consider getting a fingerprint or keypad door lock for your front door.
2. Burglar Alarms That Aren't Activated
A home security system is only useful when updated and activated. Always test your alarm system on a regular basis and check for any upgrades to the software. Always turn it on when you leave the house, even if you're just planning to run around the block. All it takes a professional thief is about 15 or 20 minutes to ransack your house.
3. Take a crucial look at your house from the outside. Is it well lit? Are there any hiding places near doors and windows? Its better if you can spot a potential weakness in your "scenery", then to have a professional burglar exploit it. Light is a thiefs' enemy and darkness is their friend.
4. What could slow down a burglar from entering your home? Simple home security devices such as Deadbolt locks on doors and windows, Bars, grates-items that are visible from the exterior of the house will not only act as a deterrent, but slow down a potential burglar(s) should they decide to try to make entry. Time is of the essence when trying to break into a home. Time is the enemy of the burglar.
5. Noise is also an enemy of the burglar. Many home security alarms are activated by doors or windows opening or by motion. So as a summary so far, Lights, Noise and Time are the three biggest deterrents to an intruder. If you implement these home security tips you will avoid a lot of potential break-ins. There are some other things that will help as well.
6. Don't leave valuables in plain view, that is a big temptation to a thief. Consider using a Diversion Safe for small valuables. Neighborhood Watches are also a good thing to get involved with. Strangers usually stick out lie a sore thumb in a neighborhood and should be reported immediately to police.
7. Always make your home look occupied even when you're gone. Intruders are much less likely to consider a house they feel is occupied.
8. Lock your doors and windows, even when you are gone for a short period of time. Summertime presents a huge temptation to leave doors or windows open. Don’t give in to the temptation. I have seen so many garage doors open only one or two feet to let the heat out-just enough to let a burglar in. Many police departments as a public service will offer advice on how to make your home more secure. Call for availability in your area. There are several simple things you can do to make your home less prone to intrusion by a theif. Start with an assessment on how to make your home well lit, more secure, and in the event of an entry-how to make it very noisy. Light, time, and noise are the enemies of the professional burglar.
